Ann Coulter’s “Real” Americans Fallacy

While one can applaud Coulter’s efforts to reform America’s immigration policy, her conclusions are nonsensical and shameful.

RealAmericans

Coulter identifies immigration – both legal and illegal – as the preeminent, overarching challenge of our time, beyond which all other issues pale in comparison. Her passion and conviction may well carry the day for the hearts and minds of many Americans. But is she right?

Coulter summarized her thesis on the Joyce Kaufman Show,[1] again asserting that the only issue of importance is immigration. Every other issue is subordinated to her issue (and the subject of the book she is currently hawking.) Coulter claims that – once we have settled the immigration issue – everything else will sort itself out.

After we have resolved the immigration crisis, Coulter claims, “I am confident that America will do the right thing on all the issues we care about, from abortion to gay marriage to Iran deals. The rest will sort itself out. The biggest problem right now is that Americans are being outvoted by foreigners.”

Coulter made similar claims in the 2012 and 2014 elections, asserting that conservatives just need to elect Republicans[2] to restore the America she loves. A decisive GOP landslide in 2014[3] petered out on election night, with a Republican congress acceding to most of President Obama’s demands.[4] Coulter has yet to learn that a RINO is a RINO is a RINO.[5]

Coulter was wrong then and she is wrong now!

Does Coulter really think that “on all the issues we care about, from abortion to gay marriage to Iran deals” will be fixed once we’ve dealt with post-1970s immigration? All of the cultural issues Coulter claims to care about became issues prior to post-1970’s immigration.

Immigration is Not THE Problem

Coulter’s nativism and xenophobia[6] have gotten out of hand, as she vilifies all immigrants[7] and even condemns Christians[8] who are overseas missionaries.[9] With her latest book and book tour, Coulter is actually promoting restoration of a WASP culture – a white culture.[10]

With carefully-selected anecdotes and statistics, Coulter seeks to prove that immigration is the source of all of America’s woes. Moreover, she claims that even second-generation immigrants (especially those from non-Western European nations) are somehow not really “American.”[11] Her thesis is that, once immigration is halted and foreigners are deported, America will be restored to greatness by the “real” Americans who remain.

But immigration is not the problem Coulter makes it out to be and following Coulter’s prescription to counter that crisis will not achieve the utopia Coulter envisions. History itself disputes Coulter’s thesis. The problem is not immigrants but ideas.

The American progressive movement has been populated by “real” Americans for over a century.

American progressives brought us the New Deal, the Great Society, and Obamacare. American progressives created Planned Parenthood, enacted Jim Crow, and decided Roe. V. Wade.

American progressives were apologists for first Hitler, then Stalin, then Castro. American progressives were useful idiots throughout the Cold War and supported the communist regime in Cuba for half-a-century. (Coulter apparently forgot about that “massive” bestseller which posits Liberal Treachery from the Cold War to the War on Terrorism.)

American progressives led the anti-war movement and the sexual revolution. American progressives infiltrated academia, Hollywood, the media, and government.

American progressives have ruled over major metropolitan cities for over fifty years, implementing policies which have devastated cities and incited racial violence (e.g., Detroit, Ferguson,[12] Baltimore[13]) while ignoring black-on-black violence. Changing immigration policy would not reverse those trends. These problems are, at heart, ideological and cultural,[14] not racial.

The root causes of the problems and crises America faces today predate the post-1970s immigration of Third World immigrants that Coulter vilifies. Mexicans are not the monsters Coulter depicts.[15]

Coulter’s claim to fame as a polemicist and provocateur arose from her targeting of entire groups of people as evil villains seeking to destroy America and civilization itself. With her latest book, subtitled The Left’s Plan to Turn Our Country Into a Third World Hellhole, Coulter impugns the motives, character, and patriotism of everyone who disagrees with her.[16]

A decade ago, Coulter blamed everything on the Left. Now, she blames everything on immigrants. In another decade, will she blame everything on space aliens?

Are Coulter’s ‘Facts’ Right?

Ann Coulter has been sacked by the Truth[1] more often than RG3 has been sacked by the Detroit Lions.

Coulter often does speak truth, but she all too often tells lies. Discerning between truth and lies can be problematic with Coulter. During her latest book tour, Coulter has told countless lies. Small lies. Big lies. Smug lies. Hurtful lies. Shameful lies.

Sacked

One tactic Coulter uses to present her propaganda[2] (to promote herself and her agenda) is that of speaking with conviction. She will forcefully and vehemently lie with the expectation that her seeming conviction will convince others of her falsehoods.[3]

Coulter v. Colmes

Before highlighting some of the many falsehoods from Coulter’s current book tour (so many lies, so little time), it would be instructive to consider an exchange with Alan Colmes:[4]

Coulter: “The truth about immigration is always the same; the lies are always different. I look at the studies. You know, you have to read down and figure out, where’s the lie here? Where’s the lie there? They lie in all different kinds of ways.”

Colmes: “So whenever I present data you don’t like, you just say it’s a lie.”

Coulter: “Exactly!

Colmes: “So every study is wrong except the ones you quote?”

Coulter: “Look! I show the data. You can look at it yourself.”

Whenever Coulter is confronted with facts she cannot refute, she will dismiss them or deny their veracity.

Coulter’s False “Facts” on Her Book Tour

Here are just a few of Coulter’s many prevarications:

[The hyperlinked headings provide the truth about her fraudulent claims.]

ISIS poses no threat to the American homeland.[5] “I don’t even care about ISIS! … ISIS is not at our doorstep.”[6] And, “I have a little tip. If you don’t want to be killed by ISIS, don’t go to Syria.”[7]

ISIS: 0.[8] Dismissing the terrorist threat in America, Coulter concluded a column: “Now go back to worrying about ISIS.”[9]

America has taken in 25% of Mexico.[10] “America has already taken in one-fourth of Mexico’s entire population.”[11] And, “We’ve taken one quarter of Mexico’s population.”[12]

Civil rights[13] are only for blacks.[14] “The only time you should be able to sue for discrimination is if you are an African-American. That’s it! That’s it! I don’t want to hear about anybody else. You can hire whomever you want to. You can fire whomever you want to. … Civil rights are for blacks.”[15]

Diversity is white.[16] Ann Coulter’s America is exceedingly small and insular. Coulter crows, “It used to be more diverse, admittedly from white, Western European countries, mostly. But I consider, you know, the Scotch, the Irish, the English – I think that’s enough diversity. That really mixes it up for me.”[17]

America will be a WASP nation again.[18] Coulter explained (emphasis added): “It’s a monochromatic WASP country that other ethnicities have come to and for the first 400 years of its existence, (as a colony and then as a country) the ‘wildly diverse’ immigrants were other white western Europeans. That was the extent of the diversity.”[19]

And, “Send me a million people who want to come to America, and I will decide them all before breakfast. I can pretty much decide on looks; it would save a lot of money.”[20]

Coulter has never been accused of racism.[21] “One thing I have never been called, ah, is, is, is, is a racist. Um, anyone, anyone who reads my book – or, or Mugged – will see, um, that that would be a very difficult case to make.”[22]

All immigrants are bad.[23] “My only quibble with [Trump] is that, No. 1, it’s legal immigrants, too. And, No. 2, there are no good ones.”[24]

Pro-lifers are putzes[25] and sissies.[26] “Exactly. So sick of the anti-abortion machismo from right wing sissies.”[27]

And, “… their big thing is to keep talking about this abortion thing. Well, that’s great if it were 1977. I’d think you’re really brave and you’re doing a great thing. But I kind of think you’re just a putz imitating what was good forty years ago at this point.”[28]

Mitt Romney was better than Reagan.[29] “[Romney] did better than Reagan did. I think that’s pretty good.”[30] And “The best we ever had was Mitt Romney.”[31]

Donald Trump could win as a third-party candidate.[32] “[A third party candidacy] would be fantastic! Go, Trump, Go!”[33] And “I think he could be not only a nominee who could win but a third party candidate who could win.”

Hillary Clinton will be Democrat nominee.[34] “I promise you Jeb or Rubio are going to lead to a Hillary presidency.”[35] And, “You have to vote for Hillary over those two[36] [Bush and Rubio].”[37]

Nikki Haley is an ignorant immigrant:[38] “Well, I’m a student of American history. On the other hand, [Nikki Haley] is an immigrant and does not understand America’s history.”[39]

Ted Cruz is ineligible to be President:[40] “Ted Cruz gave a good answer on immigration. Too bad he’s not a natural born citizen!”[41]

Carly Fiorina is just a woman who can talk:[42] “I’ve turned against [Carly Fiorina] as of yesterday with the hot, hot hate of a thousand suns. … At first, I admit I was suspicious because I hate this, ‘Oh, a woman can talk, oh, isn’t that’s great?’”[43]

Ann Coulter is better that Donald Trump.[44] “Trump’s a piker compared to moi.”[45]

Coulter is Not Conservatism’s Best

Delusions of grandeur aside, Coulter cannot be trusted because she thinks too highly of herself and she regards her lies as superior to the truth that we all need to make informed decisions.

RG3 boasted: “I feel like I’m the best quarterback in the league, and I have to go out and show that … There’s guys in this league that have done way more than me. But I still view myself as the best because that’s what I work toward every single day.”

Throughout her book tour,[46] Coulter has boasted about her superiority,[47] praising herself[48] and her book.[49]

Coulter is sacked by truth on a weekly, if not almost daily, basis. Until Coulter speaks the truth and sticks with the truth, Conservatives should not stick with Coulter.[50]

Coulter: All Immigrants Are Bad

[We interrupt our regularly scheduled commentary to address yet another Ann Coulter blunder – one which exposes Coulter’s very heart.]

Ann Coulter claims that there are no good immigrants!

NoGoodOnes

Last night, Coulter established herself as the undisputed head cheerleader for a Donald Trump candidacy (even in a third party): “Go, Trump, go!”[1] But, more than that, Coulter disparaged every immigrant in America.

Trump’s campaign contests illegal immigration while Coulter contests legal immigration. As she puts it, “My only quibble with [Trump] is that, No. 1, it’s legal immigrants, too. And, No. 2, there are no good ones.”

There are no good immigrants? Coulter explained, “We’re taking in the poorest of the poor from the most corrupt, backward cultures of the world.”[2] (For Coulter, any non-white, non-British nation is backward.)

There Are No Good Ones

Coulter’s hyperbole has been getting the best of her for the better part of two decades. Coulter stereotypes people – from individuals, to cultures, to nations – with a very broad brush. Like Orwell’s Big Brother, Coulter is in perpetual warfare against a host of enemies – all of whom do not look like her.

With her first book of this millennium, Slander (2002), a polemic which accused all liberals of being at war with civilization, Coulter began launching a series of jihads – against liberalism, Muslims, women, and any individual or group of people she does not like.

That pattern persists to this day. According to Coulter, there are no good Democrats, only a few good Republicans, and, now, no good immigrants.

Nikki Haley – Second Generation Immigrant

In the midst of the confederate battle flag controversy, Coulter falsely accused Gov. Nikki Haley (R-SC) of being an ignorant immigrant.[3] In reality, Haley is a native South Carolinian well-versed in its history.

Remember, Coulter has her own definition of “immigrant.” The word Coulter wields like an epithet – immigrant – she applies to American-born citizens, calling them second-generation immigrants to fudge her data.

Gov. Haley, a citizen by birth, has proven herself a successful leader who has assimilated very well in America (even converting to Christianity). Haley’s success contradicts Coulter’s stereotype of legal immigrants and threatens her agenda.

Bobby Jindal – Anchor Baby

Gov. Bobby Jindal (R-LA), also a very successful governor, is an anchor baby. Gov. Jindal is noted for championing American exceptionalism. He identifies with being an American, not a hyphenated-American. His patriotism is undeniable. His love of country is indisputable. And, like Haley, he has converted to Christianity. As noted in 2007, “Jindal has assimilated into an American lifestyle and Christian religious practices.”

But Jindal is not a WASP. Coulter is very conscious of Jindal’s race and his origins (probably even his “funny foreign name”). Over six years ago, Coulter began her attack on this anchor baby who became a prominent conservative leader. Coulter wrote:

“Even Gov. Bobby Jindal, whom I suppose I should note was the first Indian-American to give the Republican response to a president’s speech, began with an encomium to the first black president. (Wasn’t Bobby great in ‘Slumdog Millionaire’?)”[4]

Nevertheless, Coulter seriously asserts, “one thing I have never been called, ah, is, is, is, is a racist.”[5] Doesn’t she read what she writes and hear what she says? At times, Coulter’s writings are suffused with racism.

Coulter’s Xenophobia

Few people looking at the evidence can doubt that Coulter is a xenophobe. She claimed, “All countries suck compared to America.”[6] She condemns soccer as evil and un-American.[7] She vilifies Christian missionaries.[8] She decries all things foreign.

Most recently, Coulter has exchanged her fatwa against Muslims for one against Mexicans.[9] When she talks about immigration, she does so in distinctly racial terms,[10] demonstrating her confusion over race.[11] Moreover, she promotes white supremacy[12] and the resurrection of a WASP America.[13]

Within that context, it is easy to understand Coulter’s comments about immigrants. While most conservatives believe in the cultural superiority of America, Coulter takes it many steps further, finding nothing of value in other cultures and actually corrupting the American identity into a racial, WASP, ideal.

Why does Coulter hate contemporary immigrants? Because they are not white WASPs.
