RIP Nell Husbands Martin Coulter

The death of Mother devastated Ann Coulter.

Following Mother’s death, Ann published a very personal, poignant, and often political eulogy.

In her eulogy, Ann mourned the loss her of “true No. 1 fan” who “was the biggest fan of” her entire family. Mother “was a little love machine, spreading warmth and joy wherever she went.” Mother loved hugging her daughter and telling her “what a wonderful, precious daughter” Ann was.

Ann felt safe and secure in her mother’s love: “My whole life, as soon as I’d see my mother’s face I’d know I was safe, whether I was a little girl lost in a department store or a big girl with a problem, who needed her mother.”

This Mother-Daughter love was very real.

A devoted daughter, Ann took excellent care of Mother during her declining years as she battled ovarian cancer. Ann even postponed publication of her seventh book, Guilty, to tend to her mother’s needs.

Ann understandably misses Mother’s “constant, unconditional love.”

In many ways, Ann emulates Mother (often to an extreme). In other ways, Ann repudiates Mother (often in extremist ways). Today, Mother would be both proud of, and perturbed by, her daughter.

Like Mother, Like Daughter

Ann and Mother both cherished their New England and Southern roots. Coulter’s prized genealogical roots all trace through Mother: New England Puritans and Daughters of the American Revolution, coupled with a solid Southern heritage.

Mother wanted to be specifically remembered for her “contributions to the Republican Party, the New Canaan Republican Town Committee and the Daughters of the American Revolution.”

“Mother may have thought her most notable characteristic was her Republican activism,” Coulter wrote, emphasizing her “deep-seated political activism” and being “always delighted to be with people talking about politics.”

Sounds a lot like Ann.

Mother was very proud to be “a direct descendant of at least a dozen patriots who served the cause of the American Revolution.” In fact, she “traced her lineage on both sides of her family to Puritan nonconformists who came to America in 1633 seeking religious freedom on a ship led by Pastor Thomas Hooker.”

Coulter, as she typically does, takes everything to extremes. Ann is so proud of her heritage as a Daughter of the American Revolution that she regards herself as a “settler” – and a “Native American.”

Ann also regards herself – a WASP – as a true American. (Hence her nativist and xenophobic impulses.) She treasures her Puritan roots, making her a self-identified authority on all things American.

Moreover, Ann is proud of Mother’s Southern roots, praising Mother’s “fighting Kentucky spirit” and “charming Southern accent.”

Coulter lauds the Confederacy whenever she can and tweeted (8/3/16): “Southerners accounted for 38 percent of those killed in Iraq and 47 percent in Afghanistan.” She then asked Gov. Haley: “How about Nikki put their flag back up?”

In other words, Coulter contends that Southerners who died in combat in Iraq and Afghanistan were fighting for the Confederacy!

Coulter continued: “The Confederate flag won’t lead to thousands of dead and maimed Americans, as Muslim immigration does. The only danger posed by the Confederate flag is that media elites will hold the South in even greater contempt than they already do, assuming that’s possible.”

Yes, Coulter equates Southerners with Confederates and believes that our brave military members from the South are currently fighting for the Confederacy and not for America!

Thus, Coulter has become the face of the Alt-Right movement, seeking restoration of a distinctly white WASP America while, simultaneously, promoting a neo-Confederate worldview.

Unlike Mother …

Mother was generous. Mother “probably contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to various conservative outfits over the years.” Ann, not so much.

Ann’s generosity extends to helping those who can help her.

If she can get something out of it – self-promotion, praise, paycheck, book sale, networking connection – Ann will do it. Otherwise – if it does not personally benefit her – forget it.

Mother was compassionate. Since she “was a little girl,” Ann saw that “friends, relatives and neighbors would bring their problems to Mother.” Why? Because Mother “had a rare combination of being completely moral and completely nonjudgmental at the same time” and would give “good counsel” without making others feel worse about themselves.

As for Ann, well, her entire career is based upon wounding other people. Given a choice between fact and polemic, Ann usually chooses the latter.

Mother valued human life. She was a “gentle lady” who “never had an unkind word for anyone.” In fact, “Father would always smile and say, ‘Your mother defends everyone.’”

Mother was proud of Ann for her pro-life speech presented before a Roman Catholic women’s group in New Canaan, CT, and later published in Human Life Review and various essay collections nationwide.

Now, though claiming, “I am totally pro-life,” Ann passionately attacks conservatives and Christians for pursuing a pro-life agenda.

As far back as the late 1990s, Coulter began attacking pro-lifers for purely political purposes. In reality, Coulter would have pro-lifers do nothing and let the unborn fend for themselves!

Mother was a devout Christian. Faith figured prominently in Mother’s life. She was very active in her local church and her faith was important enough to her that she faithfully turned her daughter to Presbyterianism.

In her moving eulogy, Ann emphasized Mother’s Republican activism and DAR lineage. Surprisingly, Ann missed Mother’s Christian beliefs. She utterly ignored her Mother’s faith.

Though claiming, “I’m an extraordinarily good Christian,” Ann has attacked Christians for most of the past two decades. She even attacks Christians for being godly!

Ann lovingly gave honor to Mother with her words, but in her life Coulter dishonors Mother.

Gone Astray

As I wrote last year:

I suspect that Ann never really believed in the Christian ideals and conservative principles she espoused. Indeed, she was not the “true believer” everyone believed her to be. Rather, she adopted those ideals and principles from her parents, whom she loved. Her father died in 2008; her mother in 2009. Since then, Ann’s moral and spiritual compass no longer exists. Ann is being tossed to and fro by the pragmatism of the moment and the passing whims of her heart.”

“Coulter hates conservatives, Christians, and pro-lifers for being what they are because she once believed she belonged in those categories. Now, whenever these people of principle act on their principles, she is put to shame as a charlatan. They expose Coulter for who she really is – a fraud.”

“Will Ann always be a fraud? Only God knows and only He can bring meaning and direction to her life. Unless and until Ann courageously faces the reality of who she has become and fights the good fight of faith to become the person God has called her to be, she will always be filled with hate and fear.”

“May God grant Ann repentance and transform her heart.”

Yes, Ann Hart Coulter has, indeed, lost the moorings of her parents’ presence, principles, and piety. Her heart is now turned in the wrong direction, away from God and opposed to His will. Whether or not she knows it, Ann has rejected God and His will for her life.

Instead, the “Emperor-God Trump” is her Savior. Coulter has rejected God and arrogantly placed her will above His.

Coulter recently said that with Mother’s passing, she can now say anything she wants to. She claimed, “I really am the freest person in America right now. I can say anything.”

The Easter season reminds us that we are all equal before the cross and that we must humble ourselves before the One who saves.

Obviously, humility eludes Ann. Her hubris abhors humility because 1) she rejects its efficacy and 2) she regards it as a sign of weakness.

Here’s the rub: Without humility, salvation is impossible. We must humbly come to the cross to accept God’s love and salvation. Until we do, we are not saved and we will never have peace.

Our Father’s Love

Ann praised Mother for her “unconditional love.” Mother was loving – and loved.

Mother’s love actually points to our heavenly Father’s perfect unconditional love. But only God perfectly expresses and exhibits unconditional love. Mothers can come close, but imperfectly.

Our Father has a perfect love, presence, and power. Trust Him!

In her eulogy, Ann expressed reassurance that Mother and Father were reunited in heaven and that she would see them both in time.

Revelation 21:4 reveals: “And God will wipe away every tear from their eyes; there shall be no more death, nor sorrow, nor crying. There shall be no more pain, for the former things have passed away.”

I pray that God wipes away all of Ann’s tears, from whatever source.

No Better Than Trump!

You are (or become) who or what you worship.

Ann Coulter worships Donald Trump[1] and has become just like him.

No Better Than Trump

Coulter’s most recent column[2] demonstrates that she has no interest in truth or what’s right. Instead, it is all about self, self, self! Just like The Donald.

Her column was the most Orwellian[3] one I’ve ever read! (More to follow in a future column.)

One propagandistic quality and Alinskyite tactic contained therein was Coulter’s prevalent use of name-calling and ad hominem attack.[4] Employing those tactics, she defamed a truly honorable man (Ted Cruz)[5] and victimized,[6] yet again, a victim (Michelle Fields)[7] of assault by Trump’s campaign manager and death threats by Trump supporters.

Coulter once decried such behavior, asserting, “This is such a great issue. This is very important, how our society treats the rich and powerful – other than Al Gore and Bill Clinton, we know how they get treated: they can commit felonies and get away with it. But not everybody can! It’s not anarchy yet! We are still a nation of laws.”[8]

Now, Coulter sides with the rich and powerful against us mere mortals. (Coulter is one of them!)

Coulter once detested the Clintons for demonizing “bimbo eruptions” and “trailer park trash.” Now she does the very same thing on behalf of Trump. (Yet, Coulter claims that she never sucks up.)

Coulter has gone bonkers over Trump[9] since he announced his candidacy.

I Was Wrong!

Until this week, I believed that Coulter was better than Trump. No longer.

Indeed, Coulter is worse than Trump.

Why? Trump doesn’t know any better. He has always been a libertine, limousine liberal and a boorish, bullying buffoon. He doesn’t know any better. Trump doesn’t even know any of the conservative or Christian principles and ideals that Coulter has forgotten or forsaken.[10]

But Coulter does know better. She knows the lies she spews and the lives she damages with those lies, and, yet, she continues to lie anyway.[11]

It truly grieves me to see the person Ann Coulter has become.

There was a time when Coulter was a dynamic voice for conservative and Christian thought. Now, Coulter has become a Hollow Woman who is utterly clueless[12] (yet, she thinks she knows better than everyone else)![13]

Once passionate over First Things, now she is passionate about nothing.[14] (All is vanity!)

Thankfully, God offers Amazing Grace to all who come to Him.

Ann Coulter’s Journey to Damascus

After a bizarre summer of exceptionally objectionable commentary and extraordinarily foolish statements,[1] Ann Coulter abruptly about-faced,[2] seemingly changing her spots.[3]

It was as if a hand from heaven reached down, deep down into the bottomless pit that Ann was digging herself deeper and deeper into, and grasped her hand, stopping her descent into oblivion; a hand that lifted her out of her own Ann-crafted prison of a pit and granted her freedom; a hand that granted grace to a person whose name means grace.

Damascus

Ann on Her Road to Damascus

What happened? Did Ann experience a conversion on her own personal road to Damascus? Did God grant Ann an epiphany? Was Ann able to see herself, her circumstances, and the world from a different (heavenly) vantage point. Is the new and improved Ann Coulter the result of a paradigm shift, a change in attitude and perspective, with a consequent change in behavior?

In a series of comments and commentaries over the past two decades, Coulter has previously dismissed Road to Damascus conversions as liberal propaganda devices. Coulter regularly contests those who claim “lifelong conservative” status but then dare to criticize her and she denies that conservatives can ever become liberals. (She must think it’s easier to become a faithful follower of Christ than to become a godless liberal, as she would put it.) Here are three examples from her writings:

  • “But liberals think they can fool normal people with their road-to-Damascus I used to be a Republican!’ conversion stories.”[4]
  • “[Supreme Court Justice John Paul] Stevens is more like a pre-road to Damascus Or maybe the late Justice William Brennan.”[5]
  • “I did not know the road to Damascus was this long, with so many opportunities for conversion.”[6]

Is Coulter on the very road she once pooh-poohed? If so, she should thank the hand that grasped hers and lifted her out of her self-made pit.

Analysis of Most Recent Ann Coulter Columns

Having seen Ann at her worst this summer, examining her ten most recent columns may give us insight into her current intellectual, emotional, and spiritual state of being. (My critique concentrates more on the literary quality of her writing than on the accuracy of her claims or the cogency of her analysis.)

8/20/14.[7] ***½ . This was Coulter’s first laudable column this past summer. It was an abrupt departure from her previous columns going back months. It was non-polemical, factual, and very tame for a Coulter column. Prompted by the Ferguson firestorm, Coulter decried “the old media’s standard for any police shooting of a black person is: ‘Racist until proved innocent.’” Coulter went point-by-point through the known facts of the Ferguson case and also encapsulated the long history of race hoaxes in America.[8]

8/27/14.[9] ****. Another non-polemical, factual column. As a Ferguson follow-up, Coulter explained how racial quotas in hiring police officers can be lethal. Her claim – “If the Ferguson police are forced to hire more minorities and women for the sake of diversity, the one thing we can be sure of is that more black people will be murdered, raped and assaulted” – is backed up by ample evidence. In lowering standards, everyone is accepted, regardless of how unqualified they may actually be.

9/3/14.[10] ****. Coulter debunks the myth of racial profiling for traffic stops, pointing out the flawed methodology in an oft-cited study: “As is usually the case with bogus race studies, the pivotal 1993 survey compared speed stops on the New Jersey turnpike to the population of all drivers on the turnpike – not with the population of all speeders on the turnpike.”

9/10/14.[11] ***½. Somewhat polemical, Coulter effectively makes her point: “Getting Obama to postpone a rancid idea [executive amnesty] isn’t something to celebrate. Yay! We did it! We forced him to delay doing something the country doesn’t want for SIX WEEKS! Every Republican candidate better be jamming Obama’s threat down the throats of their Democratic opponents.”

9/17/14.[12] ****½. One of my favorite columns[13] from a literary perspective. My favorite quote for its imagery: “Turn that into a mnemonic, sew it on needlepoint pillows, include it in your wedding vows, right-wingers. For the next six weeks, nothing matters more to the country than Republicans taking a majority in the Senate.” Second quote: “That means Republicans need to flip three Democratic seats to take a majority in the Senate. Hopefully, the GOP will take more than three, and store them like chestnuts for a long, cold winter.”[14]

9/24/14.[15] ****. A good, factual exhortation. Conclusion: “Republicans can win a Senate majority, take back the presidency, repeal Obamacare, build the Keystone pipeline, slash oppressive government regulations, end special tax deals and government contracts for the Democrats’ big donors, restore an honest IRS and nominate serious people to the federal bench. But they’ll never do any of those things if they can’t learn that mass immigration from the Third World is wildly unpopular with voters.”

10/1/14.[16] ****½. Engaging and light-hearted, Coulter debunks several liberal myths: guns, domestic violence, Obama death threats. Coulter writes: “The theme of all these liberal fantasies is that the greatest threat to women, minorities and liberals are right-wing white men with guns – especially on a Super Bowl Sunday. (Referees are beheaded at soccer games in Brazil, but liberals are terrified of America’s national sport.) White men are even threats to themselves, should they be foolish enough to purchase a gun.”

10/8/14.[17] ***. Clever (in using other people’s words to speak for her), on point, but minimalist effort. Relies heavily on Washington Times’ comment board and incorporates her own witty remarks. Conclusion: “The Republican leadership has got to choose between their voters and their donors. They can’t have both – at least as long as the donors keep big-footing the conservative base on immigration. No amount of money in the world is going to help a candidate who’s allowed to sell only crap.” A minor quibble: “crap” is an unladylike word to use.

10/15/14.[18] *****. Superb, factual, well-reasoned, incisive, non-polemical. Coulter on Ebola: “It’s becoming increasingly clear this is just another platform for Obama to demonstrate that we are citizens of the world. The entire Ebola issue is being discussed – by our government, not the United Nations – as if Liberians are indistinguishable from Americans, and U.S. taxpayers should be willing to pay whatever it takes to save them.” And: “And now we’re going to have to let in entire families with Ebola, because the important thing is – actually, I don’t know why. It’s some technical, scientific point about fences not working.”

10/22/14.[19] ****½. Another top-notch column. Coulter on Obamacare: “As we now know, under the ‘Affordable Care Act,’ your only options are: (1) Take the crap-ass, high-priced/no doctor Obamacare plan; or (2) go bare, and risk being bankrupted by an expensive medical problem. Either way, the price will be astronomical.” One minor quibble: “crap-ass” is an unladylike word to use.

Dramatic Improvement

Almost overnight, Ann’s commentary dramatically improved. Despite a few rough edges, most of her ten columns were commendable, engaging, edifying, and enjoyable. They represent a much improved literary style and craftsmanship.

The question remains, what of Ann’s underlying character traits. Veracity and integrity are non-negotiable in journalism – and in living a Christian life. Let us pray that the quality of Ann’s character come to match and exceed that of her craft.

Update: With the close of the 2014 election cycle and the advent of winter, Coulter appears to have reverted to her old, unconverted self. Beset by delusions of grandeur, Coulter again wants to dictate to the American people whom they can nominate for President.
